Reflections Of The Heart

A beautiful life to a man who forever changed the field of cardiovascular medicine was had by the late great Dr. DeBakey. Regardless if you ever met Dr. DeBakey, his ingenious inventions and visionary procedures have saved countless lives and may impact your life and those you love for generations. He was the first to successfully use an artificial heart. In World War II, he developed MASH Units and Dacron artificial grafts. He was the first doctor to perform Aorta-Coronary Bypass Surgery, etc, etc, etc.

We can learn valuable lessons in business from him. He was associated with The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas for nearly 60 years. He treated everyone from kings to common man according to Dr. Marc Boom, Executive Vice President of The Methodist Hospital.

A first-hand witness of his nonprejudicial compassion was friend and former Baylor administrator, Dr. Antonio M. Gotto. "Not a single time not once did Dr. DeBakey ask, 'Can this patient pay? Does this patient have insurance? Is he covered by Medicare? Is he a VIP?' On the contrary, he treated his patients equally, never turning away someone in need of his healing. Following Dr. DeBakey's example," Dr. Boom said, "we will save and improve lives for many generations to come. I cannot think of a more fitting legacy for this great man."

As I was once told, "Follow your heart [your passion] and the money will follow!" What we do in life should not be based on how much money we can make. It should be based on that we make a difference. Making a difference isn't a cookie cutter. If we love what we do, somehow there is enough money. Together we can make a difference each doing what they love and do best.

Dr. DeBakey had a jazz funeral sendoff with a rousing rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In," ushering in a celebratory mood. This is way to be remembered!
